Yes, i know - the website is in need of more regular updates!

We all had a fantastic gig playing at the Sexy Solstice festival. Thank you to all the fans who turned out to see us play. I must admit i had a huge ammount of fun!

However, this was tempered by the knowledge that it was Tori's last official live perfomance with the band. We all wish her well in her new ventures, and who knows - she may pop back and play for us on an random basis!

As usual, Rome Burns are busy in the background. There's ideas bouncing around concerning the new EP/Album as well as new merchandise in the pipeline.

Another Static Murmur review

The webzine, Nemesis To Go, has got a review of The Static Murmur

"It's not easy to get a handle on Rome Burns. The cover art makes The Static Murmur look like a prog-rock concept album, while the band's MySpace page describes the band as 'Alternative/Electro/Post-Punk'. Yet I'd wager the post punks and alternokids have never heard of Rome Burns, for they ply their trade exclusively within the UK goth scene. That's a nice pile of contradictions right there, and we haven't even got to the music yet.

So, let's get to the music. Recondite, wordy lyrics spread themselves luxuriously over a densely-packed thicket of guitars and programming. It's a very English experience, in a way. Simon Sartori Hendley's dry, erudite vocal style - he practially lectures his way through the songs, rather than singing them - casts him as the intellectual cousin of New Order's Bernard Sumner, striding to and fro as he declaims upon the lecture hall podium. The music fits the comparison, too. 'Then Janus' is perhaps the best example of the band's beefed-up New Order feel, with its masses of solid guitars buttressing the to-and-fro melody. Extra points for the line 'Cork and flax and sealing wax' - a typically Rome Burns-ish reference, redolent of archaic detail. It's at times like this, when the band let their engagingly un-rock 'n' roll side come to the fore, that they really score.

Elsewhere, the band's station within goth circles is revealed by the traditional thwap-and-splat of the Really Obvious Drum Machine, still the universal signifier of goth scene residency, while the fizzing, pulsating electronic embellishments - hear them sprinkle themselves over 'The Escapologist' and 'Bodhidharma' - hint that Rome Burns have at least half an eye on getting some Cyber Dancefloor Action. I can't help wondering what Rome Burns would sound like if you put 'em in a studio with a plain old pop producer, and, dare I say it, de-gothed them to the point where their engagingly odd, literate, band persona really came to the fore. All due respect to Manuskript's Mike Uwins, who's on the desk here - he does a sterling job, but as the main man of a goth band himself I think he instinctively defaults to the Goth Scene Way Of Doing Things.

But then, so do the band. The bizarre heavy metal guitar which gatecrashes the party on 'Rebecca Eureka' and spends the song having a punch-up with the cheesy drum machine definitely sounds like someone's trying for a touch of Goth Metal Crossover, and that just isn't a box into which Rome Burns naturally fit. Likewise, the programmed beat-workout that stutters and thumps behind 'Allegiance Lies' sounds like its reference point is the Slimelight dancefloor rather than pop music. The song needs a simple arrangement, prodding the verse neatly up to that nifty tension-release chorus, rather than an excess of chuck-it-all-in electro-clutter.

Rome Burns are a intriguingly indiosyncratic pop group. They're the New Order who stayed in to do their English Literature homework instead of partying at the Hacienda; they're an urban, urbane XTC. Tantalising hints of all this appear on this album, but it's a struggle against the production. And also, perhaps, against the band's own perception of themselves, despite their MySpace dissembling, as just another bunch of goth scene rockers. They could be - they are - more than merely that. Someone should tell 'em. Perhaps I just have."

Rome Burns Announce Their New Bassist (sort of...!)

Thanks to everyone who volunteered their services to fill the role of Rome Burns Bassist. You're all wonderful and I'm sorry we haven't got back to you sooner.

We have decided that for the moment we won't be looking for a permanent replacement but may be in contact with some of you individually over the next year-or-so about helping out for one or two gigs.

So we'll keep your details (in a smaller less ominous version of the government's planned ID database!) and hope to work with some of you in the future... or at least see you at the odd gig or nightclub.

Do not be surprised however if you see Tori playing with us for some time in the future as she is definately included in this list of 'talented friends with four-stringed instruments' and we have learnt that for the right price (a bottle of alcohol and a pack of Haribo) she can occasionally be lured back for the odd gig, video, album, tour, fashion shoot, interview, red-carpet event or curry-night!

Bobby's Tagine

Lovely Bobby from Edinburgh passed me this recipe and I couldn't refuse! Tasty Tangine with lamb, chicken, a whole host of yummy things and and some cheeky raisins. Tuck in lads - it's not all deep fried Mars bars!!!

You will need

1 chicken leg per person

Lamb (leg steaks are ideal)

Tinned Chickpeas

Couple of tomatoes

Onion

Carrot

Celery

Green Beans

Garlic

Fresh Parsely

Fresh Coriander (the Pinkster says "You can never have enough fresh corriander!!!!")

Raisins

Stock (vegetable bouillon power and water is fine)

Cumin seed

Coriander seed

Paprika

Whole dried chillis

Salt

Pepper

OK, now onto the doing bit!

1. So.... roast your cumin and coriander in a hot saucepan then crush in a pestle and mortar. Bobby recommends adding some salt crystals to help with the grinding.

2. In a large Creuset pot or similar, bring olive oil and butter to a good heat and then add the chicken legs to brown. Once done remove them and keep warm.

3. Reduce the heat a bit, chop your onion and add to the same pan and fry until soft and jsut starting to go brown. Chop the garlic and add.

4. Dice the lamb and add to the pan (optionally brown the lamb) and then add loads of stock and then add the spices, seasoning with one or two chillis to taste (whole de-seeded; can be picked out before serving of course)

5. Skin the toms (easier when dipped in boiling water first) de-seed and chop the tmos. Chop the carrots and the celery. Drain and rinse the chickpeas and add along with raisins

***by the way, the sauce should be fairly fluid so sort it out if it's a cloggy mess!***

6. Return that badboy chicken to the pan, making sure that it is lying on top with the browned skin just out of the sauce

7. Cover and cook gently for an hour and a half until the lamb is tender. This can be done on the stove or in the oven at a low heat.

8. 10 minutes before serving, top and tail the green beans and add to the pan along with the chopped parsley.

9. 5 mins before serving add the coriander

10. Serve on a bed of cous cous which will absorb the stock nicely and garnish with some left over coriander leaves

Toripink recommends a refreshing 1996 Pinot Grigio if you are making this before 6pm, or a Fruity light red if it's an evening meal.

If you've f**ked it up bigtime then grab a Newky and serve your unhappy Tangine on toast and whack on a gory film. At least something that night should work out for you.

Well... I don't know about you chaps but that sounds bloody lovely - thanks Bobby! xxxx

PRESS RELEASE: Want To Be in a Band?

It is with regret that Rome Burns must announce that Tori will be leaving the band later in 2009 to concentrate more on her career (or, we suspect, to merely chase boys and to search for the secret of Haribo)

I think it's fair to say that in the couple of years she's been with us she has brought so much energy and light that it's hard to remember the time before Tori (or BT as historians will presumably call this period)... but Rome Burns will continue to produce and perform weird, warped and wonderful music for themselves and the world at large.

As Rome Burns fans there are two things you can do to help the band during this transition. Firstly if you all buy hundreds of albums each then you can make Rome Burns profitable (and indeed lucrative) and we can all give up our other jobs and become full-time musicians... or secondly (and more realistically) if you know of a suitable replacement bassist please get in contact via this website.

Ideally a Rome Burns bassist should know how to play the bass, be able to put up with the band and the strange and frightening world of gigs, promotions and recordings, be able to travel to the aforementioned gigs, promotions and recordings and should have that intangible quality known as 'a good attitude'.

Get in touch. Join a band. Create Music. Change the World.
